Preventive Measures for Tinnitus

Noise induced tinnitus, acquired from a history of noise exposure is considered as the most common form of tinnitus. Onset of tinnitus may occur very suddenly or gradually. Exposure to a very loud sound may result in temporary or permanent tinnitus. Here are a few preventive measures for tinnitus:

  • Avoid exposure to excessively loud noise. Be cautious about the noise level for the events or activities you plan to attend (i.e., concerts, sporting events may be loud)
  • Try to wear hearing protection even for activities around the house such as blow-drying your hair, or when using a lawnmower
  • Practice stress management and relaxation techniques.
  • Consult your physician about the possible effects prescribed medications may have on your auditory system
